You Wrote It. Now You Can Hear It.

Most people who start writing their life story never planned to be writers. They just wanted to save a memory before it faded. Over the last few weeks, Tale of Life has made that first step easier. Now there’s a second step too: you can listen to your life story, read back to you for free, right from your profile.

Three ways to write, then listen to your life story

If a blank page still stops you, the life story question generator asks one real question at a time. Pick who you’re writing for and a chapter of their life. Then answer in whatever way is easiest. Type it, or tap the microphone and just talk. Stuck on a question? The “Get help from ChatGPT” button opens your question in ChatGPT, so you edit a rough start instead of a blank page. Every answer saves straight to your profile.

Now you can listen to your life story

Next to the “Save as PDF” button on every profile, there’s a new one: “Listen to this story.” Click it, and your browser reads your chapters aloud in one of a few clear voices. It’s free, with no account, app or upload. The reading uses the same speech technology that is already built into your browser, much like the Web Speech API used across the web.

That small change makes the whole thing feel different. A parent who prefers listening can hear their child’s chapters on their own phone. You can also catch an awkward sentence with your ears that your eyes skipped twice. And it is moving to hear your own words about your own life read back to you, plainly, as if someone is finally paying attention.

Try the whole loop

Answer one question, in your own words or your own voice, then sit back and listen to it. It takes less time than deciding whether to start.

Try the question generator free, no signup needed to see how it feels.
