Billie Eilish’s Parents Slept in the Living Room: The Family Behind the Bedroom Album

Billie Eilish grew up in a small two-bedroom house in Highland Park, Los Angeles. Her parents slept in the living room, so that she and her brother Finneas could each have a bedroom. In one of those bedrooms, with a microphone that cost about 80 dollars, the siblings recorded the songs that would win the four biggest Grammy Awards in one night. This is the story of that family.

Two actors and a small house

Billie Eilish was born in Los Angeles in December 2001. Her parents, Maggie Baird and Patrick O’Connell, are both actors; Maggie is also a teacher and Patrick also a musician. After they started a family, work was hard to find. Their house had two bedrooms. As Finneas later explained, the children each got a bedroom and the parents slept in the living room.

Choice one: time

Both children were homeschooled, mostly by their mother, because the parents wanted to spend time with them. Billie has said she learned maths by cooking with her mother. At eight she joined the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus; she also danced, and her mother taught both children the basics of songwriting. Finneas started writing and recording music in his bedroom.

A song for a dance class

In 2015 Billie’s dance teacher, Fred Diaz, wanted a song for a new dance. Finneas had written Ocean Eyes for his band, but felt it suited his sister’s voice better. They recorded it in his bedroom with one Audio-Technica microphone that cost about 80 dollars and, on 18 November 2015, uploaded it to SoundCloud so the teacher could download it. Within two weeks it had been heard several hundred thousand times.

Choice two: stay home

An injury ended Billie’s dancing in 2016, but the music went on. She signed with Darkroom and Interscope Records that August. Even with a major label, almost all of the debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, was recorded in the same bedroom studio at their parents’ house. It reached number one in March 2019. In January 2020, at 18, Billie won Best New Artist, Record, Song and Album of the Year, the youngest person ever to win all four in one year.

Choice three: the room nobody saw

The world heard the songs. Almost nobody saw where the parents slept. Without that living room there would have been no bedroom studio and no song for a dance class. The parents stayed close, working on the tours, and in 2020 Maggie Baird founded Support + Feed, which has given out more than 1.5 million plant-based meals and pantry items.

What any family can learn

Give children time. Take their small things seriously. And sometimes, quietly, give up a little of your own space so someone else has room to grow. Most families have a sacrifice like that which was never written down: a parent who slept on a sofa, worked a second job or drove to every practice.
